[18:43:04] <etqw> RR2|work answers: Partially legacy reasons (the software solution was stable and good enough). There is an OpenAL backend too, but it is disabled by default and still has a few bugs. Right now it doesn't offer any additional features, so there was no need to use it.

[18:46:46] <etqw> bongoboy answers: Several reason, but not least because the Artillery deployables were cooler. The GDF Soldier's Rocket Launcher was actually originally concepted with a secondary function as an infantry mortar in mind - you'd swing it down, put one end on the ground, hold it by a handle and drop mortar bombs down it. But it just wasn't as fun as deploying Artillery and designating targets.
