"follow your dreams~"

Postby Audio » Sat Feb 28, 2009 20:00

I'm in a spot of bother at the moment peeps..
I got a responce from two Universities that I applied for, and i went to an open for the one with most promise. Turns out it wasnt the course i thought it would be and I am now stuck with a nasty choice.

My first choice is being a Games Designer. The open day i went too, i found that the course i applied to was more programing then visual design..oh bugga!
They suggested I try a University on the other side of the country..into another country infact.. to Scotland (me being England)

My second choice is computing (network systems) which at the time was a back up plan incase the games option wasnt possible. I have an interview for this one soon and now that i have open options for games again..I'm not sure I want it !! This place is within walking distance and easy enough to pay for.

For 3 years I have been working to build up money for Uni and i had everything planned out incase i ran out of cash or something went wrong. In my plans I didnt acount for the course I chose to be wrong! I'm not 100% sure i have time left to look for another Games course. :(

--On one hand, I have my dream job in ditgital media and a possible happy future working somewhere I want to be. This also means going into the unknown.
--The other hand is a job i know i could fit into however i already know how boring it could be. This proffesion is very usefull to have and could probably land me with decent wages to live on.

Do I follow my dreams and risk losing a year waiting for another chance? Or do I take what i have and accept the office job I'm best suited for?

well, i really think you know the answer best urself :)

but, to give you an answer on you're question:

there are more options besides the two you gave. and i really think there is something that you really want to do, you'll only have to find it. (dont forget ofc that there will always be something you dont like)

what things do you like, what are you're passions, and whatelse not?

also, i really aint no expert or smth, but the study you do, does NOT fully compose your career, so whatever you do NOW if you want to do something else later on, thats possible, especially when you've done university.

i dunno whether its of any use, but good luck anyways :) keep us posted 8)

ps, and if you really dont know, in holland we have companies who specialise in helping students choose their study, i dunno whether that excists in england?

They always say get a job you enjoy doing.
These courses are 4 years long so I cant really afford to do 2 years only to find I dont want to be there.

I suppose In my mind i have already decided to take the chance but the risk could lose me time. If i put down this offer of networking only to find I dont have what it takes to get into digital media, I will have nothing..back to square one.
Really worried about that :(

Is your problem also about money? Because i did read that you saved money for a couple of years.

When I were you I would first get as much as possible information about both studies, talk with students etc. And when you are still not sure you always have the opportunity to wait one year, work a bit, and when you made the choice its even maybe possible to do some preparation for your study.

Good luck! Its all op to yourself. Btw im also going to study next year, and im also not really sure what to do! First pass my exams :P
quoting deep:
henksmadje please read topic more carefully and other topics too where u reply, then u get the point and dont have to make stupid posts.

If you think the office work would be stereotypic sitting by a computer in a jungle of gray small rooms... dunno but I think it could be more fun when you get to know people who work there :P

On the other hand, if you want to take a chance and go for the designer then go! But is there any quarantee that it wont be similiar to what you do in the office? Sitting at PC all day long?

Imo I would take office work, see how it feels and then make my final choice. I dont know what your situation really is, but I hope you will be the right choice for you.

So to get things straight you went to 2 open days, option 1 is going to Schotland and option 2 is computing which is near you rite? (the jobs you suggested are the things you can become after you finished the study?)

The problem is tht what you pick now will usually become your job.
I would definitely pick the thing I like the most. A year is nothing imo, dont forget tht after you finished 1 of the studies you will have to do it for alot more years.

What Nick says is true but he doesnt know tht studying costs shitloads of money and after you finished your study you cant start another one in a few years.

Besides tht, I think this is something which you should decide by yourself, we probably arent like you and we dont know you. I dont know what you like so I cant really decide for you....

I chose my study based on what I found interesting(I like my study but I kinda *beep* it up...) and what I want to be later an advocate.

Personally i think you should choose for the game designer option. Although in the beginning you ll have to program more then you wish, you ll learn to do something that you like to do. And if you see that it is nothing for you then that year wasn't completely lost at all. You ll learn things that the others wont learn. I study informatics and i have to say that the biggest part of it contains math and studying and exercising on your own. And those who have more experience clearly have a huge advantage over a computernab like me.

Follow your dream.
When you cry, we ll be there to sing to you

My first choice is being a Games Designer. The open day i went too, i found that the course i applied to was more programing then visual design..oh bugga!

if u like visual design u should choose graphic, coz game design i mostly programming, and video design is graphic. I'm studying infromatics like harpix and really there's lot of math math math.

My friend who ended informatics told me once: "if u want to programm, u have to start with, wife, couple of kids, home etc. and then start programming coz then u wont have time for the others things". And after a year, meeting programmers i see how true it is.

If u dream is to make games go as game designer, but u must know if u wanna be good at this u will have to spend a lot of time.
If u dream is to make the visual design of a game, u choose the wrong course, dont start it, try to get for a graphic course, if it is to late, see if after one year u can switch courses without loosing this year ( in my school it is possible to change from informatic into graphic after one year)

The point is do u wanna create games, design their graphic or work at office?

And, dont be lazy, it isn't good you take in mind, that the second option could be better becouse its near, discaver the world, learn new people and do something with passion, not for money.
