setting up a server

Postby ussr » Sat Apr 26, 2008 5:50

greetings,
I found this community do to some quite random searching, but have loved playing on the servers. My friends and I would like to play WolfET lan on a dedicated server (I have an extra machine). While there are plenty of guides to setting up a server, some are outdated or just plain non-user friendly.

Could someone point me in the right direction ot set up a dedicated server with ubuntu 8.04?

Thanks
-ussr-

I am used to install all the stuff on a rootserver via putty and winscp (ssh access) but it seems like you want to install it on a home computer where ubuntu runs on => you sit in front of the computer ... i dont know exactly how to install something there but try to find a black box where you can enter commands.

explanation of my howto:

number. what we do

command for the black box

1. select a folder where to install the ET server (lets pick /home/ussr/).

cd /home
mkdir ussr

or

mkdir /home/ussr

2. go in the folder

cd /home/ussr

3. download the installation packet

wget http://www.prime-squadron.com/final/dow ... 60.x86.run

4. give the permission to run it

chmod 777 et-linux-2.60.x86.run

5. run the pack (install it)

./et-linux-2.60.x86.run

there will come an installation screen which will guide you through the installation ... dont install startmenu stuff, rewrite the path from /usr/local/game/enemy-territory to /home/ussr/enemy-territory and let the bins install at the default path (/usr/bin) ...

6. patch it (would only be nessacary if you dont run it in lan - its a security update - you dont have to do this step)

download this file: http://www.prime-squadron.com/final/dow ... -2.60b.zip

and replace the old etded.x86 (which should be at the path /home/ussr/enemey-terrritory/) with the new etded.x86 from the path ...

7. add your mod

download + install the mod you want ...

it should look this way after finished:

/home/ussr/enemey-terrritory/etmain
/home/ussr/enemey-terrritory/noquarter

or /home/ussr/enemey-terrritory/jaymod ...

and add a server.cfg with a mapcycle ...

8 and than: start it

./etded.x86 +fs_homepath "/home/ussr/enemey-terrritory/" +fs_basepath "/home/ussr/enemey-terrritory/" +fs_game noquarter +map oasis

and your gameserver should run ...

if you got any questions, feel free to post it here ;)
