Some ubuntu help needed

Postby GoldenBullet » Sat Sep 01, 2007 11:19

Darned. I updated kernel, Linux's main thingy, and my screencard cant progress it anymore! says something about X-driver is not valid etc.

U know how I can remove the driver so it runs without my Nvidia driver? That could fix the problem.

-NOTE- Linux doesnt run on windows commands and I have no graphics, I cn only type commands :/

kernel update requires you to reinstall your propietary nvidia drivers. using another driver (like vesa for example) won't give you 3d acceleration. just reinstall your driver from the command line.

i'm an ati user, so i have no clue about nvidia on linux, but maybe this will help: http://albertomilone.com/latest_nvidia_udsf_edgy.html

and use the ubuntu forums ;) http://ubuntuforums.org/ - someone will have the same problem as you.

You have a nVidia gfx card ?

It's simple to manually install :

1/ Go to your home directory :

$ cd ~

2/ Retrieve the driver from nVidia website (check nVidia site to see if it's the right driver for your card, perhaps should you use a legacy version, depend on your card).

# wget http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L ... 1-pkg1.run (this command is for most recent card, 32bits)

3/ Install it

# sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-100.14.11-pkg1.run -n -a -q

3.5/ ooops, I forget this :)

# nvidia-xconfig

4/ Reboot (or restart X server)

# reboot (or # init 5)

PS: # -> root user or sudo. I'm not using Ubuntu, but the rules should be the same for all linux.

You're right Lisa :)

You'd better to search if the driver exist on universe/multiverse/..

But strange that a simple kernel update don't reinstall you're nvidia driver (for a 'simple' linux distrib as Ubuntu).

If the driver doesn't exist for the moment (that happens sometimes), the manually install still work :)

yes it's strange... i only encountered this problem after manual driver installs. but maybe golden didn't install the restriced modules before...

actually, maybe a simple

Code: Select all
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

will do the job? :D

It seems that my new drivers cant run ET or any 3D games ( :wth: )
I try fix it now, but Id like to hear some advice too, coz im kinda newb in these things

blergh. Now I have driver, but xorg.conf cant run it :S it seems I have newest driver AND kernel, but either kernel or driver is TOO GOOD for the other :S And those are bots newest possible.

looks like I must keep a pause from ET for a while :(

I read those posts and I see you installed the kernel repo-package. Sometimes developers make a mistake in kernel compilation process and do not check all module dependencies, which causes that users have problems with direct rendering and even starting X-server (for example module version mismatch error). I suggest you to downgrade or upgrade kernel or nvidia packages. And of course check the link below, if you have not checked those modules, I suggest you to manually recompile your kernel (look here, sources in /usr/src/ needed). But the last solution is pro, and if you have not done this before, better look for downgrading kernel or nvidia versions, cause you might destroy your penguin completely. And of course it would be nice if you would show us your /etc/X11/xorg.conf, maybe some configuration problem?

P.S. Look in "glxinfo | grep direct", you should see Direct Rendering: Yes. If not, you haven't acceleration started and your machine is working with xorg open drivers, not with those from Nvidia manufacturer.

Hey mnich, don't give a Gentoo doc to a Linux newbie ;) (it's suicidal ! :P)

Golden, if other solution don't work, try to manually recompil your nvidia driver (as descibed above) : it's not so difficult, and that work in every situation.

If you try that, be sure to install the right driver for your card (100.x, 96xx, or 76xx serie). You will need some package before (gcc, binutils, make, kernel-source or kernel-header). After compilation, don't forget to run

# sudo nvidia-xconfig

and then reboot

And check this, too : https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Binar ... wto/Nvidia

Disavantage of this methode : You will need to re-run this methode, each time you upgrade to a new kernel.

currently I have no xorg, coz the reason why it doesnt work is in it.
I think the problem is in kernel, so how can I downgarde it? And synapric tips maybe? And I did glxinfo yesterday, and it said I dont have those things.

If I could only get that xorg and kernel working, becouse I loaded the newest drivers so its not in there.

Naaaah, make menuconfig works in the same way o every linux os (except BSD ofc) ;) Compiling is like first sex, big panic before, great joy after and experience for future, second time isn't so scary :P

And seriously... It doesn't matter which linux is on this machine, kernel MUST have those options either compiled or biuld-in vmlinuz.

GB, show me your whole /var/log/Xorg.log please and /etc/X11/xorg.conf please.

Hum... nvidia driver seems to be correctly installed. Copy paste your /var/log/Xorg.0.log here. Perhaps it will show us something interesting.

@mnich : Yeha, I know. It's not so difficult to compile a kernel, and I personnaly know my way around (use linux since 2002, and try most of the well know distributions).

But, don't tell a ubuntu newbie to recompil his kernel for using nVidia driver (and all the must-to-have kernel options are already activated in the standard kernel of most easy-to-use distribution ;)).

Great times, nothing worked correctly :) The fastest linux popularity growing time....... I had PLD 2.0, rpm red hat based Polish distro. Love it even today!

Well, maybe I suggested this because I have sometimes problems with this on arch (non-standard kernels, like ck-, kamikaze-, fallen-, viper-patchset). But ok, let's forget about recompilation :)

Hawk, what distro do you use? If Ubuntu, than I will say nothing more to not disturb, cause I have arch. How motto says - primum non nocere :)

The latest drivers for nvidia in repository are

sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx (1.0-9631)
or for newest
sudo apt-get install nvidia-glx-new (1.0-9755)

I update my kernel to the new one without problems. Maybe you install the nvidia driver with an other way like the .run

The update process have normally installed the new restricted modules automaticaly.

Send us the log error of xorg with only the errors after a startx.

PS:
If you use Compiz, you'd better enable this in your xorg.conf

mnich > Heya, i'm using ArchLinux too :), with a custom vanilla kernel :)
It's fast, flexible, simple, KISS, i'd fall in love with it last year ^^.

I really like openSUSE too, in the "easy-to-use" category (but all of this is a liitle bit OT :) )

Strange.

Your xorg.conf seems correct, but I can see in log that "nv" and "dri" are loaded... both are incompatible with the proprietary driver "nvidia".

Anyone has an idea ?

Code: Select all
(EE) Unable to locate/open config file

Should be
Code: Select all
(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/xorg.conf

Are you sure you have xorg.conf in /etc/X11? 8O If you do not use graphic login managers like kdm, xdm, gdm or slim (it is possible you have gdm) try to run xserver by command:
Code: Select all
X -config path_to_your_xorg.conf

Your linux does not load the nvidia driver, but nv driver:
Code: Select all
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) nVidia Corporation GeForce 7600 GS rev 162, Mem @ 0xe8000000/24, 0xd0000000/28, 0xe9000000/24
New driver is "nv"
...
(II) LoadModule: "nv"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//nv_drv.so
(II) Module nv: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
compiled for 7.2.0, module version = 2.0.0
Module class: X.Org Video Driver

If your Ubuntu starts with X (gdm), you should press Ctrl+Alt+F1, this will give you access to console. You should kill all X and gdm processes (with kill -9 pid_of_X_and_gdm_process). Then you should check if you have xorg.conf in /etc/X11. Look with ls -l at permissions on this file, should be
Code: Select all
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root
If permissions are different, use chmod 644 xorg.conf. Then try to run command X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf and tell what happens by showing /var/log/Xorg.log (I think the first half of the file will be more than enough :))

Hawk, why clean vannilla? Why not to recompile ck-patched sources or other patchset kernels? Are you running some weird beta kernel? Are you a kernel h4x0r?
About linux distros I prefer OpenBSD or PLD Linux for servers (Polish Linux Distribution, Polish only from name:P) and arch or gen2 for workstations. I have a weak processor (PIV 1.6Ghz) to put gen2 on my pc, compilation time is too long :( I hate all easy-mouse-click-configurable linuxes like Ununtu staff, OpenSuse, Mandrivias or Fedoras, blaaah, I must know what is going on right now :D Total maniac :P

Right, your xorg.conf is correct but isn't used by your xorg server..

Hehe, yeah, sometime I play with the prepatch kernel tree :)
I like CK too, but it's now discontinued... so vanilla only actually :D
I use openSUSE when I should _work_, and when I've no time to play with my Linux. openSUSE look very nice, and is even innovative. And it's more stable as Arch, which is too much up2date sometimes ;)

I think he might add this to Section "Modules":
Code: Select all
Load "dri"
Load "drm"

On my ATI fglrx driver direct rendering is turned to No without these.

Perhaps move (or better, copy) your backup :

# sudo cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf

... or try X -config /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
