FPS lagging problems

Postby Coyote » Tue Nov 13, 2007 13:52

Hi guys :D

I am having real problems with ET lagging - graphics wise - a lot of the time, mainly when I open fire and I get reduced to less than 10 FPS - not good :(

I've asked for help before and people have given me all sorts of cvars, and such to alter and now my ET settings anc config are on the lowest possible config but I still get lags.

So I guess it may be the hardware. I have a Radion(?) 9550 256MB graphics card with up to date drivers - surely this is enough for ET!?

I have a Pentium 4 Processor @ 3.2Ghz, on a foxconn motherboard - again more than enough I would think

however I only have 512MB of ram, would getting more reduce lag, or do you know of any other things to help

thanks

a radeon 9550 should do the job really, but don't forget that if you're playing on a full NQ server, on a fps-heavy map especially, even higher-end gcards start to have severe fps problems. you can blame NQ, fps-heavy maps and the fact that your card has to render tons of players. and a radeon 9550 IS pretty old, i remember on my old 9250 on a full NQ server on oasis for example, i'd get about 12 fps too. so... maybe you just reached your cards capacity for playing NQ with 35 other players.

but, assuming that your graphics settings are as low as possible (did you also switch off things like bullettracers, muzzleflash and wolfparticles?), maybe you forgot to increase your hunkmegs (set com_hunkmegs 128 - or higher, you can use about 1/3 of your RAM)? this should give it a severe boost. also, detailed sky off (or fast sky on - can't remember what the option is in NQ) should give a considerable boost.

Maybe locking your fps works?

Code: Select all
/com_maxfps X
Because of a bug in the QuakeIII engine its possible to lock your FPS at a certain number.
Example: /com_maxfps 43 - /com_maxfps 76 - /com_maxfps 125 - /com_maxfps 333

Yeah HW should be enough for etpro, anymaps, quite stable 76fps. But full funmod servs can really surprise always. Have you tried it with etpro? - You should.

How is your highest fps you can get then?
for example if its really unstable from 50 to 5 or is it always like 10-7?

yeah i was gonna suggest that too, just test how your gcard performs on etpro on a not-too-full server. lock your fps at 76 and see how it goes (assuming you downtune your etpro config also). if it's fine then you can blame NQ or your NQ config.

I had 2gig ram p42.8ghz + 7800 gs+ (basically a 7900gt) and still lagged to *beep* till i got my new pc last week.
One major problem I had is I didn't defrag my hard drive for 3years and it basically *beep* to fshizzle. Hard drives have a bigger impact on speed than you think when theyre shit. Download "diskeeper" and do an analyse (mroe accurate than windows one) if not just do the windows one and see how much fragmentation you got
also ram could be a problem, 512mb isnt enough nowadays

Have problems with windows too. My windows installation was about 2 years old and i get very low fps with normal hardware (AMD 2x2.2, 6600GT, 2GB, 4Mbit ADSL).
I would try to reinstall windows and do not install all these "nice to have" features. Use msconfig to disable "all" the services, like update-checker, startup-accelerater and such tools. (if you dont know what which service do, check it at google)
Temporarily disable also virus-checker and personal firewall to check out if these two components slows down the pc. (my personal firewall has much to much rules, so a local ftp slowed from 10MBs to about 3MBs with the benefit of cpu load :( )

I solved my bad performance with linux. At linux i have about 50 to 200 fps compared to 10 to 50 at windows ...

Have same lag problem, on all NQ server with 20+ peoples.

My FPS are always at 43 or 76 FPS (depend of the map, I change the lock value). I don't think it's a gfx card problem (nVidia QuadroFX 350M, 256 Mo + 256 Mo shared = 512 Mo).
I'm running Linux on a Core 2 Duo 2GHz, 1 Go RAM.

Actually, I play in r_mode = 6 (1024*768 I think), with AA disabled, and practically all gfx effects disabled too. So FPS are ok, and aren't my problem. My ping is all the time low (20 to 30).

I have ADSL 3.5 Mo/512ko (down/up) at home, and something like 100Mo/20Mo at work, same problem :(

So, it is the crappy NQ mod perf, or my settings ? I just dont know what to do...

r_lastValidRenderer "Quadro FX 350M/PCI/SSE2"
r_mode 6

cl_maxpackets 60
cl_packetdup 0
snap 40
cl_timenudge 0
rate 40000
com_hunkMegs 128
