answer for golf player: 2, who ever said he had to hit in straight line? :D

answer for 0,99999999....:

Let's call 0,99999 x and multiply all by 10.

0,9999999.... * 10 = 9,99999...... = 10x

9.9999999.... = 9 + 0.999999....

10x = 9 + x

9x = 9

so x = 1 :)

correct answer therefore is b :)

About the beer problem: How can you know what is half? So that is not possible, someone said smth like: Fill 3 litre thing. Put it in 5 litre thing. Fill 3 litre thing again. Put all you can in 5 liter and then whats left in 3 litre thing is exactly one litre :D

Both you and Golden are correct, although i must say i favor his explanation :P

By the way; The family contains 7 members, two parents, four daughters and one son :) ( As no other relatives were mentioned one must assume that these ones forms the entier family)

When it comes to the golf-riddle, my guess is that one uses two strokes. I assume that the golf ball will be on the ground the whole time. The first strike reaches 11m the second one will hopefully strife and enter the hole before it reaches the last remaining meters of the second 11m shot. Final answer is therefore 2 strikes.
(Don't know if this would be considered cheating, but that's what i would try in reality at least :P )

Another:

Two planes take off at the exact same moment. They are flying across the Atlantic. One leaves New York and is flying to Paris at 700 km/h. The other one leaves Paris and is flying to New York at just 565 km/h. The distance from New York to Paris is about 5851km.

Which one will be closer to Paris when they meet?

BS! There will always be a infinite small little minuscule difference!
In infinity it comes close to 1 and therefor we call it one but it will never be a shiny number 1 in my eyes!

About the airplanes, i agree with ammz!
15 what?

yes, the airplanes will crash if they take off at same time :D

The golf player will not go in straight line. (btw you try to hit a golf ball in a straight line hard enough to go for exactly 11 metres...) He will strike a bit to one side, and with second strike he can aim at exactly 11 metres :)

Harpix - you are completely right, I also used that argument to say that professors in university were wrong, but infinity - 1 = infinity, so it makes no sense arguing that 0.9999.... is not equal to 0.

I copied from Goldy btw, but I couldnt remember who wrote it :P So he wins ^^

:D

Code: Select all
A farmer challenges an engineer, a physicist, and a mathematician to fence off the largest amount of area using the least amount of fence.

The engineer made his fence in a circle and said it was the most efficient.

The physicist made a long line and said that the length was infinite. Then he said that fencing half of the Earth was the best.

The mathematician laughed at the others and with his design, beat the others. What did he do?

Code: Select all
Once there was a night watchman who had been caught several times sleeping on the job. The boss issued the final warning. On the next night he was caught with his head on his hand and his elbows on the desk.
"Aha, I've caught you again," exclaimed the boss. The watchman's eyes popped open immediately and he knew what had happened. Being a quick thinking man, he said one word before looking up at the boss. The boss apologized profusely and went home. What was the one word?
"Better to light one small candle than to curse the darkness."

What mathematician could do? Well he probably fenced a very small area and said that its was the outside of the fence. In other words, everything else but the fenced area was actually in the fence.

Dunno what the watchman could have said. If it had been a coder I would have said compiling :D

hmm, i think i'd go for the first option :p Nah, you're not dumb, but give it another try in any case, it's not that easy to follow the instructions the first time.

When it comes to your riddle, as far as i know bulls don't produce milk, so i guess none of the countries get any milk from it :)

As for the challange-riddle with the mathematician, i had the same idea as Golden did.

New one:

During a visit to a mental institution, a visitor asked one of the doctors of a criteria which would define if a patient should be institutionalized or not.

"Well," said the doctor, "we fill up a bathtub. Then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup, and a bucket to the patient and ask the patient to empty the bathtub."

So here's your test:
1. Would you use the spoon?
2. Would you use the teacup?
3. Would you use the bucket?

Well cus its a riddle i would do it this way:
Fill up the teaspoon and empty it in the teacup
when the teacup (finally) is full i would empty it in the bucket
when the bucket is full i would throw it back into the tub and quit ^^

He made a fence around him and claimed to be outside

The guy said: Amen (the watchman thought he was praying)

Seems you won't have to go to the mental asylum after all :P You are correct.

How about this one :

If your sock drawer has 6 black socks, 4 brown socks, 8 white socks, and 2 tan socks, how many socks would you have to pull out in the dark to be sure you had a matching pair?

max. of 5 socks

cause there are 4 diffrent colors so if you take 4+1 you would have atleast 1 matching pair.

Here's a fine riddle :)

There is an ant in a closed observing glass. This type of ant can mate and reproduce every 20 min. How many ants will there after 400 min.?

Sorry if I misunderstood question Ammz. If there is one ant, and it needs to pair, then there will be just one ant. If he can reproduce himself, then... let's calculate ;)

It must be 2 to the power of 20 :)

1
2
4
8
16
32
64
128
256
512
1024
2048
4096
8192
16384
32768
65536
130072
260144
520288
1040576

and that by heart :D I hope I didnt make calculating mistake :>

So after 400 minutes there must be 1040576 ants :D unless the ant cant reproduce himself, on his own... then my brilliant maths were for nothing! Ah well....

New one from me:

Your clock is analogue (so not with numbers... sorry, idk word for sure in English). At midnight, both of the arrows are directed in the same position. What is the next time that the arrows direct at the same position again?

Other one:

A horse is pulling a plough on a farmers land. The land is exactly 30 metres long and 10 metres wide. The horse leaves 4 footprints on every square metre. How many footsteps will the horse have left behind when it covered all the land?
