when doing vector, then its all about the lighting

i usually do:
1. paint all in lightest/darkest color.
2. next layer with darker spots.
3. final layer with almost black spots (eyes, mouth, nostrils etc.)

little demonstration gif.

Tnx...helpful cuz since now i did every detail in separate layer. Do u desaturate+ posterize pic too?
