Increase in fake profiles posting advertisements

I just wanted to ask, what's happening lately? Often times when I check our forum there are fake accounts posting advertisments.
Is there anything that can be done to prevent this?

It was mentioned in this topic viewtopic.php?f=114&t=11656 and as Warren stated this is only the peak of an iceberg that gets through the filters.

We can deactivate these accounts and introduce captcha upon registration. Be it normal captcha or the sort you get on webchat.freenode.net (Google one). We might have one already, don't know. Can help with the implementation.

It is not based on alphanumberic characters ridiculously curved and damaged so that not even human can read them, rather it is based on a common sense categorization of items (pick all cows from 9 images, for instance). Unless they know a 0day in phpbb allowing them to skip it, it shouldn't be that easy to pass.

It's been tested that algorithms have better efficiency with solving standard captchas (distorted alphanumerics) than humans. So yes, second option please.
