Wolfenstein (2009) - Discussion Topic

1943. The Second World War is at its height. While Allied forces have stalled the expansion of Hitler's Third Reich, the Nazi war machine still has its boot on the throat of mainland Europe. However, the Führer demands nothing less than global domination. Enter Heinrich Himmler's feared Schutzstaffel (or SS) and its plan to master an occult force known only as the Black Sun. With this mysterious power source at its disposal, no army on Earth could stand in the Reich's path. No army but the man who had single-handedly shut down Himmler's Übersoldat program and thwarted the resurrection of ancient superhuman king Heinrich I, that is. Once again, the world requires the particular talents of special agent B.J. Blazkowicz.

Developers: id Software, Raven Software and Endrant Studios
Publisher: Activision
Release date: Summer 2009 (US: [s]August 4[/s] August 18 | Europe: [s]August 7[/s] August 18/21)
Platform: XBOX 360, PS3 & PC
Official Site: Wolfenstein.com

  • Takes place in WWII against Nazi's fully dabbling in the occult
  • BJ (the hero) will also make use of supernatural powers.
  • Game gives you a city in which the game takes place. Missions and quests take you through different parts. As you complete quests, more of the city opens up. Kind of a non-linear path.
  • Set piece and randomly generated activity block your path.
  • There is an AI resistance force that will assist you during the game at times.
  • You will also enter [s]"The Shroud"[/s] "The Veil", an alternate reality version of the city. A dimension in which the Nazi's are drawing power from.

Multiplayer

Game Informer wrote:"Raven wouldn't say much about multiplayer, other than that there won't be co-op and that it'll follow in the footsteps of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory"

Wikipedia.org wrote:The Multiplayer version of Wolfenstein is based on the same modified engine as Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Although the Singleplayer and Multiplayer version of Wolfenstein is based on id Tech 4, both versions of the game will use heavily modified versions of the id Tech 4 engine. No official information on Wolfenstein Multiplayer has been released, except for that it will follow the footsteps of Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory.

On March 16, 2009, multiplayer screenshots of the maps were leaked onto the internet. It is unknown whether all these maps will feature in the final version of Wolfenstein, as they were created by Threewave Software who are no longer involved in the development of Wolfenstein.

Hello,

These scare me...

BJ (the hero) will also make use of supernatural powers.

If it is going to turn into magic-based games, as it always was happening with such "ideas", then I doubt it will be good, old Wolfenstein.

There is an AI resistance force that will assist you during the game at times. Think of the resistance forces in MGS4 I guess?

Please tell us how is it in MGS4 as most of people right there don't know. I hope that only FEW mission on about HUNDRED will require assist. That's what I always liked in Wolfenstein - meeting other agents (Tram mission) and doing everything alone, separating this game from other copy-paste games like Medal of Honor, Call of Duty.

You will also enter "The Shroud", an alternate reality version of the city. A dimension in which the Nazi's are drawing power from.
The same, I hope it won't be half the game in this version of the city.

And the last - keep music from original Wolfenstein! It was increasing even more that masterwork of game feeling. The graphics on screenshots & trailer seem a bit plastic. I hope it will be fixed, too. The graphics aren't perfect anyway as a game of 2009 (?), of course I can wait but that plastic is awful.

Greetings.

Limitbreaker you should really read the last IGN article ;)

There will probably be a few (3) powers you can use when you enter The Veil. One of them is called 'Mire'; an item that will slow down time, I think it would be similar to the bullet time in Max Payne. Just a few extra items you can use at certain times.

The occult is just part of the whole Wolfenstein franchise but im confident they wont overdue it. Remember those lame zombies in RTCW that part sucked donkey balls :P

I copied those points from another website, I removed that part since i dont know what MGS4 (edit: Metal Gear Solid 4) is myself

From what I've read - I hope it won't become some stupid FPS-RPG which involves "missions" - "kill these nazi under the bridge and come back to me". What the hell, that's not Assasin's Creed!

Hello,

You guys seem to only care about multiplayer, not even about singleplayer, and just graphics and graphics. "Casual players", as the era of the games where games are for everyone - for nobody - comes, Peter Monyleux said. Gold years, 2000-2003, are, unfortunaly, over...

I don't know what stage developers are in, but graphics look awful on screenshots. I can't see any of many new, very good technologies used a year ago already. I just hope that it won't become again something like the very ET - where skill matters only halfly, and some people don't even know where the gun is, in the game without modifications and custom configs, which makes it ugly just to gain few more frags. I play on highest settings and I'm proud of it, that I don't reduce everything like crazy, even on good rig, just to gain few more frags... And when it comes to real play, everyone game the same - it comes out who has real skill and who is depending on configs. Fortunaly, nobody here has to go offtopic to argue with me because that kind of games is over, too.

Greetings.

Yes Stephan,

All I need is a super engine and extreme good graphics update for ET and I'll be satisfied...

I'm really sceptic about this game... :/
You say: "Great Shot!"
I say: "aimbot"

Alll looks bad.

That Graphic won't be gd for year 2005-2007
but for year 2009 it's totaly joke

What I should see in new ET to change opinion:

- totaly new graphic
- Big map editor with a lot options
- Totaly new enginee
- 3 diffrent gravitation and natural systems
- Moving things ( like boxes when u throw near greenade / panza)
- Other reviving/heal 'system'
- Ground changes after big explodes
- Real fire => can put fire on tries, grass (..)
- Animals,
- tall and small peoples, (..)
(.................)
and all which is now in popular RPG games

i'm agree...good but seems to me a game developed on 2005...
if I try to compare it to medal of honor airborne... omg
(MoHA is supported from the amazing unreal3 engine)

we well know the keys of popularity of ET
1 - free gaming
2 - ww2 cop on multiplayer based on objectives

at moment i can't see a valid sobstitute.. ETQW is great but it is not based on the ww2...

I never really cared about the ET single player but I hope they won't make a "only beta multiplayer" like ET was but a real multiplayer AND not so stupid like ETQW :X
